Is There a Place for ChatGPT in Education?

Does the rise of the AI chatbot trend scare you as an educator? Some schools have already banned its use on campus to get ahead of students misusing it. If you haven’t heard of it, ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot that interacts in a conversational way. I understand the concern for students using it as a shortcut for their learning, but there is still a place for this new technology in education. ChatGPT is a powerful language model that can be used in a variety of ways, including in education. However, it's important to use it appropriately to ensure fair and effective learning.*

Appropriate uses of ChatGPT for Administrators

ChatGPT can be a powerful tool for administrators to help with a school's marketing strategy by generating compelling and engaging content.

  • Write content for the school's website and social media channels
  • ChatGPT can be trained on the school's mission, vision, and values, and then used to generate compelling and engaging text to attract new students and parents
  • Generate email and print marketing campaigns
  • Provide descriptions for school programs and events
  • Generate content for other marketing materials, such as brochures, flyers, and presentations
  • Assist with creating and preparing for an open house event or information session for prospective students and parents.

Appropriate uses of ChatGPT for Teachers

Educators have a tremendous amount of work outside of teaching classes. This new technology can be used to free up time on certain tasks leaving them with more time to focus on engaging with their students.

  • ChatGPT can be used by educators to generate questions and answers for quizzes and exams. This can be especially helpful for educators who need to create multiple versions of the same test. The questions and answers should be used as a starting point and then modified and reviewed to ensure their accuracy and fairness.
  • Brainstorming unique project ideas for students
  • Write lesson plans
  • Put together rubrics
  • Write recommendation letters

Appropriate uses of ChatGPT for Students

One way ChatGPT can be used in by students is to assist with writing and language tasks. However, it's important to note that ChatGPT should not be used as a substitute for learning. Instead, it should be used as a tool to supplement and enhance writing abilities. But don't worry there are already tools that are designed to detect AI-generated text if you're concerned your students are using ChatGPT too much.

  • Brainstorm ideas for essays/projects
  • Check grammar and spelling, and improve writing skills
  • Further explanation on a specific topic they are having difficulty with

Use the AI assistant as a way to deepen your understanding of a subject rather than as a way to simply find answers. The goal is to use the information and knowledge you receive to learn and grow.

*Be critical of the information you receive from the AI assistant. Just because information is coming from AI does not necessarily mean it is accurate or relevant. Always verify the information and double-check the results with other sources. It's important to use it appropriately and review and edit the content before it's published.
